Saxon Phonics and Spelling
K-2
Phonics Intervention Homeschool
Kit
The comprehensive, research-based
Saxon Phonics
and Spelling K-2 includes explicit instruction in the important foundational
skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, fluency and handwriting.
This phonics series is supplemental and may be used with any basal reading
program. The objective is to provide children with the skills they need to be
able to read and spell independently whenever they are developmentally ready.
Phonics Intervention was written
specifically for older, struggling students who have difficulty reading and
spelling. This supplemental program is designed to ensure that no student is
left behind.
Phonics K, Phonics 1, and Phonics 2 homeschool
kits contain many of the same elements, so ordering information will follow the
explanations of all three programs rather than repeating the information.

Phonics K
1st Edition, 2001
Phonics K begins by working with auditory
discrimination skills to assess children's phonemic awareness -- that is, their
cognizance of the different sounds of the English language. Phonemic awareness
indicates that children are ready to learn to read. When they are ready, the
parent begins to introduce each letter individually. In order to allow plenty of
time for exposure, one week is devoted to the introduction of each letter.
Phonics K students will:
- learn the sound, name, and written form of each
letter
- review daily all previously taught letters to
ensure sufficient exposure to and mastery of each letter
- create words by blending sounds
- spell by un-blending sounds
- never be asked to read or write sounds that
have not been taught
- be assessed regularly to monitor progress
- participate in games and activities that
motivate, reinforce, and remediate

Phonics 1
1st Edition, 2001
In Phonics 1, reading and spelling are the aims of
all instruction and practice. Phonics 1 begins by teaching a new letter or letter
cluster every day, then reviews those letters for as long as necessary.
Phonics 1 students will:
- learn two letters and then begin blending
sounds to read and unblending sounds to spell
- review daily all previous learning and complete
worksheets for continued reinforcement
- learn to spell by using knowledge of the
spelling rules taught rather than by using only memorization
- learn common suffixes and selected prefixes
- read from small books (controlled, decodable
readers) that contain words with sounds they can blend
- be assessed regularly by comprehension and
spelling tests so that parents can monitor progress
- participate in games and activities that
motivate, reinforce, and remediate

Phonics 2
1st Edition, 2001
Phonics 2 begins with a quick review of vowels and
consonants and then moves to decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension.
Phonics 2 students will:
- encounter challenging comprehension questions,
advanced spelling words, and higher-level vocabulary
- learn prefixes and suffixes
- receive continual reinforcement by completing
daily worksheets
- read factual as well as fictional stories
- participate in games and activities that
motivate, reinforce, and remediate

Phonics K-2 Homeschool Kit Contents
Saxon's primary phonics programs have been
carefully planned and packaged. All you need to successfully teach each program
is included in the homeschool kit.
Phonics K, Phonics 1, and Phonics 2
homeschool kits contain the following:
- The Teacher's Manual
has
been carefully written to use language and provide activities appropriate for
the student's grade level. The unique instructional format provides the parent
with directions and lesson scripts that include possible student responses. Each
lesson contains a list of materials, preparation instructions, the entire
scripted lesson, and reduced versions of applicable student materials. Also in
the manual are introductory materials explaining how to implement the program,
coding charts, a glossary, word lists that may be used for extension activities,
and detailed game directions.
- Teaching tools are included
to help implement the program. These include review decks, kid cards, a rule
book, an audiotape, and a video instructional guide.
- Literature
Extensions, now part of the Phonics K-2 teaching tools, supplement phonics
instruction by incorporating quality works of classic and contemporary
literature. All titles have been carefully selected from core reading lists and
should be readily available in libraries or bookstores. A booklet of fourteen
extensions is provided for each level of the primary phonics series. Each
extension provides practice in literary analysis and comprehension skills as
well as an activity for phonics reinforcement.
- Student Materials. The student is given a
set of grade-appropriate practice materials with which to review the concepts he
or she is learning. The set includes a two-part student workbook, student
readers, and a colorful alphabet strip with D'Nealian-style letters on one side
and block-style letters on the other. Phonics K and 1 include a complete set of
alphabet letter tiles. Phonics 1 and 2 contain an irregular spelling booklet.

Phonics Intervention Homeschool
Kit
1st Edition, 2001

Developed by Lorna Simmons, author of the
successful Phonics K-2 series, Phonics Intervention was written
specifically for older, struggling students who have difficulty reading and
spelling. This supplemental program is designed to ensure that no student is
left behind.
- The program begins with a quick review of
consonants and then moves to vowels, decoding, spelling, and reading
comprehension.
- Students are taught explicit, predictable
strategies for decoding and spelling words.
- Worksheets, speed drills, and vocabulary tests
provide continual reinforcement of concepts learned as well as a daily
opportunity to read connected text.
- All student reading materials contain fully
controlled, decodable text to ensure student success.
- A built-in vocabulary component helps increase
vocabulary while reinforcing phonics and spelling rules.
- Progressively difficult alphabetizing
activities teach dictionary skills.
- Cumulative assessments occur at regular
intervals, and specific remediation activities are provided for students who
have difficulty.
- Worksheets include twenty-five fact-based
paragraphs that teach students about U.S. history, so students learn valuable
information and don't feel as if they're in a remedial reading class.

Phonics Intervention Homeschool
Kit Contents
The Phonics Intervention homeschool kit includes a
teacher's manual, classroom materials, and a student workbook. All three
components are fully integrated into the daily lesson plans.
-
The teacher's manual
is well-organized, providing all the information a parent needs to
successfully teach. Every lesson provides model dialogue and lesson plans for
parents to follow, ensuring clear, well-paced instruction. The manual also
contains an assortment of supplementary materials, including assessments;
remediation activities; vocabulary tests; speed drills; and extensive reading,
spelling, and vocabulary word lists.
-
The consumable student
workbook serves as both a reference book and a practice book. It contains
everything the student will need throughout the year, including worksheets,
assessments, speed drills, word lists, and reference materials. The student
keeps his or her workbook at the completion of the program for continued
reference and review.
-
The non-consumable
classroom materials include six card decks, one audiotape, and assorted
masters. Letter, picture, spelling, sight word, affix, and vocabulary cards
form the Review Decks. An audiotape of phonetic sounds allows parents to hear
the correct pronunciation(s) of each letter or letter cluster. Finally,
parents are provided with a variety of masters: a pretest, a post test, a
phonemic awareness assessment, assessment recording forms, sight word
evaluation recording forms, and a master sight word list.
